This material provides the basic concept of articles (a, an, and the).
There are 2 sets and there are exercise for each set and a final quiz at the end of this materials.

Instructions

  1. You will take the diagnostic test in order to clarify your understanding of articles.
  2. You will check your test result scores after you finished the test.

Note: What is a diagnostic test?
In term of language usage, a diagnostic test will be used to identify the weakness points in using language such as grammar.

Indefinite Articles(a, an)


Aim of Set A

To understand the functions and positions of 'a' and 'an' articles

Instructions for Set A

Please do the steps as follow:
  1. Learn the indefinite articles carefully.
  2. Do the exercises after learning.
  3. When you finish learning the whole set, you will take the final quiz.

⋆ The differences between 'a' and 'an'

▸ We use 'a' before singular countable nouns which are not specific. Also, 'a' is placed in front of words that start with consonant sound words.
For Example
a shop, a book, a girl, a butterfly, a sweater
a restaurant → Can we go to a restaurant for dinner today?
▸ We use 'an' before singular countable nouns which are not specific. Also, 'an' is placed in front of words that start with vowel sound words. [a, e, i, o, u]
For Example
an exam, an umbrella, an idea, an Austrian
an hour → She is waiting for an hour.

⋆ How to use 'a' or 'an'

  1. We use 'a' or 'an' when we talks for the first time and we will use 'the'. when we use for the rest of passage.
    For Example
    Yesterday, John bought a new car for his son and 'the' car was very expensive.
  2. We use 'a' or 'an' before singular nouns of careers.
    For Example
    a teacher → John is a teacher.
  3. We use 'a' or 'an' before singular nouns of beliefs.
    For Example
    a vegetarian → My sister is a vegetarian.
    a Christian → I am a Christian.
  4. When there modifiers before singular nouns, using of 'a' or 'an' must be in front of those words.
    For Example
    a girlan ordinary girl.
    'ordinary' is adjective which modifies noun girl. So, 'an' must place before 'ordinary girl' because of [o] sound.
    an umbrellaa colorful umbrella.
    'colorful' is adjective which modifies noun umbrella. So, 'a' must place before 'colorful umbrella' because it begins with consonant sound [k].

⋆ How to use 'the'

  1. We use 'the' before specific singular countable nouns.
    For Example
    the womanThe woman in that car is my wife.
    the car → Who is the owner of the red car in the park?
  2. We use 'the' when we talk about something that we already known or use 'the' to repeat something that we talked before.
    For Example
    Could you close the door?
    I want to speak with the secretary. (You know who is the secretary that you will talk with.)
    I bought a new car yesterday. The car was very cool because it has an auto-drive function.
  3. We use 'the' before things that have only one in the universe.
    For Example
    the sunThe sun is very hot.
    the universeThe universe is very broad.
    the earthThe earth is very beautiful.
  4. We use 'the' before 'only', 'first', 'second' (ordinal numbers) and superlatives like 'oldest' and 'most'.
    For Example
    the firstThe first things you have to do is taking a shower.
    the mostThe most beautiful queen is Helen of Troy.
    the highest → Everest is the highest mountain of the world.

    Note: What are superlatives?
    Superlatives are the highest degree of comparison. There are 3 types of superlatives words.
    1. adj. + -est: e.g. the youngest, the easiest.
    2. most + adj: e.g. the most beautiful, the most terrible.
    3. change patterns: e.g. the best (from 'good' and better).

  5. We use 'the' before regions and points on the globe.
    For Example
    the Middle EastThe Middle East countries are very rich.
    the North Pole → Polar bears live in the North Pole.
  6. We use 'the' before names of buildings, museums, libraries, rivers, oceans, and mountain ranges
    For Example
    the opera house → Sydney has the opera house.
    the Museum SiamThe Museum Siam located in Bangkok.

    the Nile RiverThe Nile River flow through Egypt.
